Storm & Wind Damage Repair in Toronto & the GTA

The morning after a big blow is when we hear from most people: shingles on the lawn, a fallen branch on the roof, a new stain spreading on the ceiling. GTA storms do their damage in predictable places β€” wind peels shingles from edges, ridges and corners where uplift is strongest, hail bruises the granule surface, and lake-effect gusts find every shingle whose sealant bond had quietly failed. The first job is sorting what's cosmetic from what's letting water in.

Wind damage roof repairs range from an hour's work to a rebuild of a whole slope, and the visible damage doesn't always tell you which. Shingles that lifted and settled back can have broken sealant bonds and hidden creases that fail in the next storm. Hail damage is sneakier still β€” bruised mats shed granules for months afterward. A fallen branch roof strike needs the decking checked underneath, not just new shingles over the dent.

If you're making a storm damage insurance claim, documentation decides how it goes. We photograph everything before touching it, note the date and the damage pattern, and separate storm damage from ordinary wear in writing β€” because your insurer will. And we'll be straight with you: if the storm merely finished off a roof that was already at end of life, a claim may not fly, and we'd rather you hear that from us first.

What this covers

  • Full-roof damage assessment after the storm β€” not just the area you can see from the ground
  • Emergency tarping of open areas if rain is coming before repairs can happen
  • Replacement of blown-off, creased and lifted shingles, with surrounding bonds checked and hand-sealed
  • Removal of fallen branches and debris, with decking inspected under any impact point
  • Repair of wind-damaged flashing, ridge caps, vents and eavestroughs
  • Hail inspection across slopes, soft metals and vents, where hail leaves its clearest evidence
  • Dated photo documentation and a written scope suitable for an insurance claim
  • Follow-up check of repaired areas after the next weather if the damage pattern warrants it

What affects the price

  • Extent and spread of damage β€” one corner of one slope versus damage across the whole roof
  • Whether decking or framing took an impact, which moves the job beyond shingle work
  • Emergency measures needed first, since tarping and debris removal precede repair
  • Age and brittleness of the surviving shingles, which sets how cleanly repairs can interlace
  • Height, pitch and access, especially with debris that has to come down safely
  • Post-storm demand across the region, which affects scheduling more than price but is worth knowing

Every home is different, so we don’t publish flat prices β€” the quote is free and based on your actual job.

Common questions

Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first after storm damage?
Roofer first, in most cases. You need two things quickly: emergency measures to stop further water damage (which policies generally expect you to take) and an honest assessment of whether the damage is worth a claim at all. Small repairs below or near your deductible aren't worth a claim on your record. If the damage is substantial, we document everything and you go to your insurer with photos, dates and a written scope.
What does wind damage look like if no shingles are actually missing?
Look for horizontal creases across shingle faces β€” that's where wind folded them back before they settled again β€” plus lifted tabs that no longer sit flat, and granule lines in the eavestroughs. Creased shingles are broken shingles; the mat is fractured even though the piece is still nailed on, and the next storm finishes the job. This hidden damage is exactly what a ground-level glance misses and an on-roof inspection catches.
Will my insurance cover storm damage to an older roof?
It depends on the policy and the roof. Sudden, identifiable storm damage is generally covered, but many Ontario policies apply depreciation to older roofs or pay actual cash value rather than replacement cost, and insurers can deny claims where wear, not wind, is the real cause. This is why honest documentation matters β€” a claim that mixes worn shingles with storm damage invites a denial of the whole thing. Read your policy's roof schedule before assuming.
A branch is resting on my roof but nothing is leaking. Is it urgent?
More than it looks. A resting limb grinds granules off shingles with every gust, and the impact that put it there may have cracked decking you can't see from the ground. Don't pull it down yourself β€” dragging a branch across a roof does more damage than the landing did, and rope-pulling from the ground is genuinely dangerous. Get it lifted off properly and the strike zone inspected, ideally before the next windy day moves it for you.
How soon after a storm should repairs be done?
Open areas β€” missing shingles, punctures β€” within days, tarped in the meantime if rain is coming. Creased and lifted shingles within a few weeks, before the next big wind exploits them. After a major regional storm, every roofer in the GTA is booked at once, so getting photos in early puts you in the queue with an accurate scope. Beware the out-of-town trucks that follow storms; they're gone before their workmanship is tested.
