Metal Roofing in Toronto & the GTA

People call about metal roofing for one of two reasons: they're tired of replacing shingles every twenty years, or they've watched a neighbour's steel roof shrug off a winter that wrecked everyone else's. Both are fair. A properly installed metal roof is a 40-to-50-year decision in a climate that's hard on everything else — snow slides off it, ice dams have less to grip, and wind ratings run far past anything asphalt offers.

"Metal roof" covers several different products. Steel shingles and stone-coated panels look like traditional roofing from the street and suit most GTA houses. Exposed-fastener steel panels are the economical route, common on cottages and outbuildings, but their thousands of gasketed screws are a maintenance item over decades. Aluminum roofing costs more and shrugs off corrosion, which matters near the lake. Underlayment and fastening details decide whether any of them reach their lifespan.

The honest caveat: if you plan to sell within five years, you may not recover the premium over good shingles.   • Pitch and height, which drive staging and safety time
  • Snow guard requirements over entrances and pedestrian areas
  • Colour and finish grade — PVDF paint systems cost more than polyester and fade far slower

Common questions

How long does a metal roof last compared to shingles in Ontario?
Realistically 40 to 50 years for quality steel roofing with a good paint system, and aluminum can go longer — against 18 to 25 for asphalt shingles in GTA conditions. You're trading roughly double the upfront cost for skipping an entire replacement cycle. The paint finish usually dulls before the metal itself gives out.
Is a metal roof noisy when it rains?
Not on a house. The drumming people remember comes from barns — bare panels over open framing. A residential metal roof sits on solid decking, underlayment, and above an insulated attic, which absorbs the sound. Most homeowners report rain sounds about the same as it did on shingles, sometimes quieter with foam-backed metal shingles.
Can metal roofing be installed over my existing shingles?
Sometimes, and it's not automatically the money-saver it sounds like. An overlay skips tear-off cost but seals in whatever the deck is hiding, and the roof must be flat and structurally sound. One existing layer, solid deck, and the right system — workable. Any softness, sag or previous overlay — tear off. We check before quoting either way.
Do metal roofs attract lightning or cause ice problems?
Metal doesn't attract lightning — it's no more likely to be struck than any roof of the same height. Ice behaves differently though: snow releases in slides rather than melting gradually, which is why snow guards over doors, gas metres and eavestroughs are part of a proper GTA install, not an optional extra.
Steel shingles or panels — which should I pick?
Mostly an appearance and budget call. Steel shingles interlock, hide fasteners, and look at home on a residential street. Exposed-fastener panels cost less and install faster but read as agricultural on some houses, and their screw gaskets need checking after a couple of decades. On most detached GTA homes we'd steer you to a concealed-fastener product; on a garage or cottage, panels are fine.
