Asphalt Shingle Roofing in Toronto & the GTA

Asphalt shingles cover most sloped roofs in the GTA for a plain reason: they're the most cost-effective way to keep a house dry, and modern architectural shingles bear little resemblance to the flat three-tab strips on older homes. If you're pricing a shingle roof replacement, the choice you're really making is between shingle grades and — more importantly — between installers, because identical bundles can produce a 15-year roof or a 30-year roof depending on who nails them down.

The shingle is the visible part of a system. Underneath it goes ice and water shield at the eaves and valleys, synthetic underlayment across the deck, proper starter strips at the edges, and four to six nails per shingle placed in the nailing zone — not above it, not through the sealant. High-nailing is the quiet defect behind most blow-offs we see after a lake-effect windstorm, and it never shows from the ground.

Common questions

How long do asphalt shingles actually last in Ontario?
Plan on 18 to 25 years for architectural shingles here, whatever the packaging says. GTA freeze-thaw cycles, summer heat and wind age shingles faster than mild climates. Ventilation is the biggest variable you control — a cooked attic can take five-plus years off a roof. South-facing slopes usually go first.
What's the difference between three-tab and architectural shingles?
Three-tab shingles are a single flat layer, lighter and cheaper, with lower wind ratings. Architectural shingles — also sold as laminate shingles — are two bonded layers, thicker, rated for higher wind, and they hide roof imperfections better. The install cost difference is modest, which is why three-tabs have nearly disappeared from GTA reroofs except on rentals and sheds.
Are fibreglass shingles different from asphalt shingles?
Same product, mostly. Nearly every modern asphalt shingle is built on a fibreglass mat coated in asphalt and granules — 'fibreglass shingles' and 'asphalt shingles' describe the same thing. The old organic-mat shingles that curled badly were discontinued years ago. What actually separates products now is layer count, sealant quality and wind rating.
Can shingles be installed in winter?
Yes, with caveats. Shingles get brittle in deep cold and their sealant strips need warmth to bond, so winter installs rely on hand-sealing and careful handling. A good crew produces a sound winter roof; a rushed one produces blow-offs in March. If your roof isn't leaking, booking for spring is the easier call — if it is leaking, don't wait.
My shingles are losing granules — is the roof failing?
Depends on age. A new roof sheds loose factory granules for the first year; that's normal. On a 15-plus-year roof, granules collecting in eavestroughs mean the shingles are wearing down to the mat, and bald patches follow. That's the start of the replacement window — not an emergency, but the time to plan rather than react.
